Northern Spirit Drag Racing

About Us

Hi everyone just a bit of history for you.

Motor racing has always been in our family.

My dad (Ged Townson ) built and raced Brisca F1 Stock Cars for many years with my uncle John Williams ( Dad of Ray our 2nd crew chief)

Back in the 80s we found ourselves at the drag strip.

This was all down to Tracy wanting to check it out.

We fell in love with the sport straight away especially the awesome Fuel Altereds.

Well a few years later we decided to have a play ourselves.

We purchased a chassis from Dave Burfitt (Boss Cat)

We rebuilt it with a T bucket and a totally stock Rover v8.

Ran the car at Long Marston and Santa Pod for a few years running 13 seconds.

Over the years we modified the car considerably and ended up with a blown Rover running 11s and having a lot of fun.

Then we built dad a rail to play with and continued to run both cars.

After being in love with fuel altereds and blown motors I really wanted to learn more about them.

We met Smax Smith at Shakespeare County Raceway and he gave us the chance to get up close to his Mainline Menace Alky Altered.

We ended up crewing for Smax for a few years which was a real experience in more ways than one!!

While crewing for Smax we decided that we could run one of these monsters all be it on a shoestring budget but we knew we could do it.

So we purchased a chassis (ex Tom Hoover Showtime Funny Car)

I sold everything I owned to raise some money to start the build of our own altered.

The other love in the car world is the 1932 Ford 3 window coupe.

As I certainly couldn’t have a rod and a altered the answer was to put a 32 Ford on a altered (oh yes) Northern Spirit doesn’t follow the trend of others.

We bought a new 32 street rod body from Triple Deuce.

And cut it to bits ( to the amazement and tears of all hot roders around us at the time) the body came out just as we planned it.

Over the years we have modified and rebuilt the car many times.

The car is still running well and yes we still do it our way and on a shoestring.

When we started we all said that it is just for fun and boy we are having FUN.
